Mississippi Flag

Overview
This year Mississippi held a competition to retire and replace its current flag which is a longstanding symbol of racism from the confederacy. The state's flag commission solicited over 3000 submissions to find a unifying emblem for their next flag. Below is a select concept I submitted. The “M” monogram combined with the the slab serifs represents Mississippi’s strong heritage. The subtle wave crests in the feet of them are a nod to the Mississippi river. The Mockingbird symbolizes Mississippi’s many rising voices in harmony. In 1944 MS adopted the Mockingbird, known for its ability to sing up to 200 songs. The gold star in the middle represents excellence and the perseverance of every Mississippian. The reef symbolizes the trust in the great state of Mississippi to stand for and with all of its extraordinary citizens.
